Beyond Byron Bay | Five alternative things to do around Byron

Beyond Byron Bay | Five alternative things to do around Byron

Now, Byron is great, but here are some reasons to veer off and head back to the highway to explore its neighbouring towns. Although it has the celebrity appeal, Byron is just one of many interesting and trendy places in the area.

Here are five things to do near Byron Bay:

1. Visit the home of Ya Man in Mullumbimby.

If falafel is your thing, then you’re about to be blown away. The famous festival food truck - Ya Man’s home is in a small cafe in the main street of hippie town Mullumbimby, and trust us, you’ll want to make a stop here. Stay for lunch and order their famous Yemen Style (a delish and traditional yemenite pastry wrap with eggs, ricotta/feta cheese and spicy tomato sauce) or their Malafel Roll ( pastry with falafels, israeli salad, pickles and zaatar. Carnivores are also well looked after here, with the chicken roll also recommended.

2. Go for a stroll at Brunswick Heads

Let’s just call Brunswick Heads the less expensive version of Byron. Right on the beach and with enough cafes and shops to wander through all morning, Brunswick Heads is worth the time spent. Be sure to stop in at the Footbridge Cafe for food so pretty you’ll want to gram it before you eat it!

3. Climb Mt Warning

Whether you do this on your way down to Byron or on the way home (depending where you’re coming from of course), Mt Warning is one of the hikes you have to do before you die. The beautiful rainforest walk at the beginning sets you up for a rock scramble, assisted by chains at the end. The view from the top is *chefs kiss*.

*14 kilometres west of Murwillumbah, you’ll need to allow 4-5 hours for the hike. Be sure to check conditions before you climb.

4. Visit Bangalow

It’s hard not to be charmed by Bangalow. This heritage-listed town is a treat to walk through and is home to some quality restaurants and art galleries (if that’s your thing!) Time your trip on the fourth Sunday of the month and you’ll  experience the Bangalow Markets. Fill your keep cup with coffee and wander to find delicious eats and souvenirs. A perfect morning.

5. Swim at Lake Ainsworth at Lennox Head

A little further down the Highway, you’ll find Lennox Head. A surfy town with big vibes. Just North is Lake Ainsworth, a Tea Tree Lake, which, while it looks dark, is an experience you’ll never forget, and neither will your skin! Pack a lunch and use the BBQ facilities while you’re there. And if you’re after a beach swim - it’s five minutes away.

We’ve got plenty of hotels to choose from in the Byron Area. Give our reservations team a call to plan your trip or check out Northern NSW accommodation here.
